Roughly 1 in 100 children will experience an attempted abduction by a non-family adult during the course of his or her childhood. Unfortunately, our approach to keeping children safe from this threat is still stuck in the 1970s.
The ‘Stranger Danger’ approach – telling children not to go with, talk to, or take things from strangers – just doesn’t work. It’s not always clear who is a stranger, and who isn’t. And often, children are at more risk from people they know than people they don’t know.
